Luke Miles was born and raised in Greensboro, NC. He graduated from Grimsley High School, home of the Whirlies, in 2005 and attended NC State on a teaching scholarship that fall. Luke graduated from NC State in the spring of 2009 with a degree in Middle Grades Education (Language Arts and Social Studies concentrations). Shortly after graduation, Luke married his wife, Caroline, who graduated from the same program at NC State and teaches 6th grade Social Studies at the same school as Luke.
Since graduation, Luke has been teaching at Durant Road Middle School. At Durant, Luke has taught 7th grade Social Studies, 8th grade Language Arts, 8th grade Social Studies, and he is currently serving as the Instructional Technology Facilitator. He serves as the boys’ soccer coach as well. A couple of years ago, Luke was inspired by his colleagues to “flip his classroom” and film short video lectures that students watch at home. He saw first hand the effect this method of teaching and learning had in the math class and wanted to try it in his Social Studies class. After watching his videos at home, Luke’s students came to class with an existing knowledge base, questions to ask, and a strong desire to learn. With lecture no longer having a place in his classroom, students were more actively engaged, collaborating with one another, and learning and thinking at a higher and more challenging level.
In May 2013, Luke graduated from NC State with a Master’s in Instructional Technology and was named the 2013 – 2014 Wake County Public School System’s Teacher of the Year. During the summer of 2014, Luke started pursuing his school administration degree through Appalachian State University. Currently, Luke and his wife reside in Wake Forest, NC with their dog, Mia.
